Basilar artery thrombosis diagnosed by MR imaging.

چکیده
Dysarthria, headache, and numbness on the left side developed suddenly in a 70-year-old woman with a history of hypertension , diabetes, and posterior fossa transient ischemic attacks. In 48 hours, the patient became stuporous and had left hemiparesis. On arrival , she was comatose, with pupils in midposition and light-fixed; oculocephalic responses were unobtainable. CT was negative. MR showed lesions in the occipital lobes and in the lower part of the basilaris pontes , hypointense to the normal brain on T1-weighted images and hyperintense on T2-weighted images. Increased signal on T1weighted images was observed in the basilar artery in axial and sagittal views, compatible with thrombosis or slow blood flow (Fig. 1 ). The patient died 5 days later. At autopsy, the basilar artery had an organized thrombus and atheroma within its lumen.

Bithalamic hyperintensity on T2-weighted MR: vascular causes and evaluation with MR angiography.
PURPOSE To determine whether MR angiography can be used to differentiate between the two vascular causes of bithalamic hyperintensity on T2-weighted MR images: "top of the basilar" artery occlusion and deep cerebral vein thrombosis. METHODS A retrospective review identified six patients with bithalamic T2 hyperintensity of vascular causes. MR angiography was performed in four patients, MR ang...
متن کاملExperimental model of brainstem stroke in rabbits via endovascular occlusion of the basilar artery.
BACKGROUND Basilar artery thrombosis remains a significant clinical problem, and no reproducible animal model has been established to study the stroke within the vertebrobasilar distribution. We report a study designed to pilot test a novel model of brainstem stroke in rabbits, created by selective endovascular occlusion of the basilar artery. METHODS Basilar artery occlusion was induced in 8...
متن کاملClinical Diagnostics, Therapy and Outcome After Basilar Artery Thrombosis
Acute basilar artery occlusion is a relatively rare but life threatening condition requiring rapid diagnosis and treatment. The circumstances and predictive value for outcome in these patients are not well documented. 88 patients with basilar artery occlusion treated in the Department of Neurology at Jena University Hospital from 1998 to 2007 were identified and studied. Of these, 45 were males...
متن کاملMR of basilar artery dolichoectasia.
Demonstration of dolichoectasia of the basilar artery by CT [1-5] and angiography [6-8] has been well described. We present a case of basilar artery dolichoectasia demonstrated by MR imaging. This has not been previously described in the literature. The important MR features of dolichoectasia of the basilar artery are flowing blood through the residual lumen and fresh blood clot surrounding the...
متن کاملVirtual arterial endoscopy as a diagnostic aid in a patient with basilar artery fenestration and thromboembolic pontine infarct.
Focal signal intensity loss of the basilar artery on MR angiograms obtained in a 69-year-old man was considered to be caused by an embolus, and thrombolytic therapy was initiated. On the follow-up MR angiograms, the same oval signal intensity loss of the basilar artery was observed. On the basis of a virtual endoscopic look into the basilar artery, the diagnosis of a rare vascular anomaly--a fe...
